Dermal Fillers

What are dermal fillers?

As our faces age we gradually lose volume and elasticity in the skin. Deep lines and wrinkles appear and gravity causes skin to sag. Dermal fillers contain hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring component of our skin. Hyaluronic acid is what gives our skin its volume and elasticity. However, as we get older we produce less and less hyaluronic acid causing our skin to become thinner and age. When injected into to the skin into specific areas, dermal fillers can rejuvenate the face by filling and smoothing out deep lines and wrinkles.

Which areas can dermal fillers treat?

Dermal fillers can be used to treat: nasolabial folds (nose to mouth/ smile lines), vertical lines around lips- also referred to as lipstick or 'smoker's lines', marionette lines (running downwards from corners of the mouth). Lip enhancement and shaping can also be done with dermal fillers to give a more defined and voluminous look

When will I see the effects of dermal fillers?

The effects are seen straightaway and improves as the skin adapts to the filler. Hyaluronic acid is hydrophilic, meaning that it draws fluid within the skin and so the effects of dermal fillers are enhanced gradually over the first two weeks.

How long does the effect last?

This varies depending on the area treated and the type of filler used, as well as other factors such as if you smoke, your age, metabolism etc but generally the effects will last between 6 and 12 months.

What is the procedure like? Is it painful?

A small needle is used to inject the filler into the specific area of treatment. All the dermal fillers used contain a local anaesthetic which means pain experienced is minimised. The procedure is simple and quick, some areas taking only about 15 minutes, others needing a bit longer.

Are there any side effects?

Most side effects are very minor and related to the actual injecting, not the product itself. These include redness, minor swelling and bruising of the area. It is important to follow the aftercare advice you will be provided to minimise side effects and aid recovery. It is also important to note that if you are prone to cold sores, having a filler injection can sometimes cause a flare up.

How long do the effects of dermal fillers last?

Dermal fillers are gradually broken down and reabsorbed by the skin. This process takes months (between 6-12 months). Dermal fillers do not permanently alter your facial features and if you decided not to continue having dermal filler treatments, your face would simply return to how it was prior to treatment, the wrinkles would not be worse.
